Keeping Up With “The World”

“The Church needs to do a better job keeping up with the world.” You know… As a Graphic Designer in the Church Marketing world, I’ve heard this statement said in so many different ways at so many different times.   A friend of mine once challenged me on this particular statement saying something to the effect of…

“You mean… the Church needs to do a better job keep up with Hollywood?  Because, the Church pretty much KILLS the rest of the world when it comes to graphic design.”

If you really think about it, this is SO true.  Outside of Hollywood, the rest of the world seems like it is sometimes decades behind the times.  The video production and graphic design I see coming from your average place in “the world” is actually REALLY BAD.  Just open your mailbox (direct mail ads), watch late night TV (infomercials), or visit the mall (kiosk ads) -  you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Ok… obviously, these people are far from normal — and maybe this was a pretty extreme example, but… you get what I’m saying.  So, this post is really meant to be an encouragement to those of us in Church Marketing.  Keep up the good work!  Don’t be fooled into thinking that what you’re doing is “behind the times” or not on par with what “the world” is producing - it is far exceeding it, in most cases!  Most of all, know that what you’re doing absolutely IS helping to further the cause of Christ and the Kingdom of God.
